"I would like to thank Harry Hurley, Martin and Sheila O’Boyle, and all the tournament players, sponsors and volunteers whose efforts benefitted the HERO Campaign and this year’s other worthy charities," said HERO founder Bill Elliott. “This year’s donation will help us promote our life saving message through highway billboards, and in schools, colleges, taverns and businesses throughout New Jersey and across the country.” In addition to the HERO Campaign, the 3rd Annual “Hurley in the Morning” Golf Open also gave $11,000 each to the following – The HERO Campaign for Designated Drivers® is named in memory of Navy Ensign John R. Elliott of Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey and promotes the use of sober designated drivers with its life saving message: Be a HERO. Be a Designated Driver®. John was killed by a drunken driver in July 2000, two months after graduating with merit from the United States Naval Academy, where he was named the Outstanding HERO (Human Education Resource Officer) of his class. The HERO Campaign will hold a 10th Anniversary HERO Dinner on Thursday, July 22 at Trump Taj Mahal to benefit the HERO Campaign and the Ensign John Elliott Character Excellence Fund at the United States Naval Academy. The Campaign has been adopted by the U.S. Navy Fleet Forces Command along with the states of New Jersey, Delaware, Virginia and New York, and professional sports teams including: the Philadelphia Phillies, New York Giants and Jets, and the New England Patriots. # # # |
