Naval Academy Holds 3rd Annual John Elliott HERO Run
March 4, 2008 - More than 1,000 Naval
Academy midshipmen participated in the 3rd Annual HERO
Run in Annapolis. The race was a tribute to Ensign
John Elliott, class of 2000, and the HERO Campaign
for Designated Drivers, established in his memory.
LT. John Burroughs, the Academy's Alcohol and Drug
Abuse Prevention Officer and a friend of John Elliott,
joined Midshipmen Jared Streeter, race coordinator,
and LT Timm Heisey, USNA Conduct Officer and another
friend of John's, as they supported the event and spoke
of John's living legacy.
The HERO Campaign has grown
to become a national movement dedicated to ending drunken
driving by promoting the use of safe and sober designated
drivers.
The Campaign was recently awarded the National Highway
Traffic Safety Adinistration's 2008 Public Service
Award, and has been endorsed by the National Lieutenant
Governor's Association. Ensign Elliott was selected
the outstanding HERO (Human Education Resource Officer)
in his graduating class, the inspiration for the HERO
Campaign, which is now saving lives nationwide.
