PSP, PennDOT and PCLB Launch HERO Campaign

By CBS News 21

HARRISBURG – Pennsylvania State Police, PennDOT, and the state Liquor Control Board say everyone can be a hero this holiday season — by choosing to not drink and drive.

Today, those three organizations launched the Hero Campaign for designated drivers. The non-profit project is aimed at making state roads safer, by keeping drunk drivers off them.

State police say that while people are out celebrating for the holidays, a little planning can go a long way.

“A little bit of planning can alleviate this whole situation.  If you have a designated driver, how many lives is that going to save?,” Frank Noon, state police commissioner, said.

Pennsylvania is the fifth state to launch the Hero Campaign. It was started 13 years ago after a drunk driver killed a young naval officer. Officials say designating your hero for the night will prevent unnecessary loss of life across the state.
